As of 2020, there have been 20 projects - including everything from exploring the mesas and canyons of southern Utah for archaeological sites, trekking unsupported on King William Island along the “Franklin Trail”, traversing the Great Tsingy of Madagascar in search of dinosaur tracks, archaeological sites, and unknown caves to being the first to explore Oman’s isolated Musandam peninsula in over 70 years, to searching for missing airplanes and people.

The Adventure Science team has spent three field seasons (2018 - 2019) surveying an area now excluded from the Bears Ears National Monument, in order to provide data to the organization fighting to preserve the original size of the Monument as designated in 2016. Their light and fast survey method has covered a significant amount of terrain in this vast, and difficult landscape. These leave no trace field surveys have led to the discovery of hundreds of previously undocumented locations where cultural material or dwellings exist. The team will return to continue their survey in 2020 or 2021 depending on Covid-19 recommendations.

In December 2017, The Adventure Science team finally completed the archaeological trekking survey along the entire length of the roadless Musandam Peninsula, starting in Oman’s most northeasterly point, and finishing in the town of Khasab. The team made many exciting discoveries over the three field seasons, and published a research paper on the project in 2019 looking at remote sensing and citizen science to asses land use change in the Musandam (check it out here).

[ October, 2017 ]

Over the course of one week, in partnership with members of KWS and Flying Kites Global, this Merrell sponsored project was able to deploy 15 motion sensing camera traps in high-risk and high-traffic areas, with the goal of monitoring for illegal activities centred around poaching (including bushmeat), and the illegal harvest of lumber and firewood.

The Ghosts of Tobermory: an amphibious exploration of Fathom Five Marine Park

[ Sept. 23-27, 2015 ]

The town of Tobermory, located on the northern tip of the Bruce Peninsula, is steeped in history - both human and natural. Long home to first nations inhabitants, it is situated on a dramatically sculpted landscape formed through the erosion of the 400+ million year old carbonate rock (limestone and dolostone primarily) which forms the 900+ km long Niagara Escarpment (a UNESCO biosphere reserve).

The Fossett Files: In Search of Lost Airplanes in the Sierra Nevadas

[ July 18-26, 2015 ]

The Sierra Nevadas is a formidable mountain range running north - south for over 400 miles (primarily) through the state of California. It’s natural beauty and rugged terrain has drawn visitors - both by land and air for decades. It is home to three national parks (including Yosemite), Mount Whitney (tallest peak in the lower 48), and Lake Tahoe (largest alpine lake in North America). It is also a veritable graveyard for airplanes.

100 Miles of Wild: Madagascar's Limestone Labyrinth

[ Fall 2014 ]

During October 2014, the Adventure Science team travelled deep into the Strict Nature Reserve of Madagascar's Great Tsingy, a UNESCO world heritage site, and dangerous limsetone labyrinth that can only be accessed by qualified teams of academic researchers - it is completely off limits to all tourists. Exploration of this awe inspiring landscape yielded important information on lemur populations, a new archaeological site, a mile long cave system, and Madagascar’s most northerly known dinosaur tracks.

The Search for Lt. Steeves' Missing Jet - Continued

[ June 2014 ]

Since its inception in 2008, Adventure Science has developed a reputation for its ability to combine the talents of scientists and adventure athletes over a wide variety of expeditions, but especially in cold-case searches for missing people and aircraft. The Adventure Science team travelled to the high Sierra Nevada mountains to continue the search for the infamous Lt. Steeves' missing USAF Lockheed T-33 Jet. Missing since 1957, this incredible tale of survival saw Lt. David Steeves, a young pilot, rise to national fame overnight after enduring nearly two winter months in the high Sierras after ejecting from his crippled jet during a routine mission.

100 Miles of Wild: North Dakota Badlands Transect

[ Spring 2013 ]

The 100 Miles of Wild project has a simple aim: discover first-hand the condition of the “wilderness” that inspired Roosevelt’s effort to preserve wilderness for all Americans and the World. The goal is to travel on foot to seldom-visited, isolated places within the Badlands. The Badlands (once referred to as "Hell with the fires gone out”) seem an unlikely place for a trip on foot, and that is precisely why the team undertook this project.

Beyond Roads: The Musandam Oman Expedition

[ March 05 - March 20 2011: Oman ]

Adventure Science will travel beyond roads to the tip of Oman's Musandam peninsula in search of ancient tsunami deposits and undescribed archaeological sites. The region is remote, rugged, and isolated, and because of this, has been avoided by researchers for over 40 years!

[ June/July 2010: California ]

2010 will see the Adventure Science team travelling deep into the high Sierras to search for the wreckage in hopes of putting final closure to this mystery. Once again, teams of adventure athletes will scour the high alpine for signs of the wreckage. The team will analyse all available technical and scientific data to help ensure success, but in this high altitude playground, mother nature will ultimately control the outcome of the search.
